Dysart Surgery does not prescribe sedatives for fear of flying. This decision has been made by our GP partners and is adhered to by all prescribers working at Dysart.
Prescribing sedatives for flying is not recommend for the following reasons;
- It may impair your response and ability to react in an emergency.
- Prescribing guidelines doctors follow Benzodiazepines are contraindicated (not allowed) in phobia. GPs are taking a significant legal risk by prescribing against these guidelines.
- While most people find drugs like diazepam sedating, a small number will become agitated and aggressive. This can impact flight safety.
- Some sedatives are illegal in a number of countries and you may find yourself in trouble with them.
We appreciate that fear of flying is very real and very frightening. A much better approach is to tackle this properly with a Fear of Flying course run by the airlines and we have listed a number of these below.
